10 fabulous plants for whatever is the weather

Posted on 12 December, 2014 at 2:35

Decorate your garden this spring and summer with stunning plants that will come trumps, no matter what the weather throws at us.

 1)Hydrangea macrophylla Magical series

Its a fantastic value for money, producing loads of large domed flower heads over summer in a range of colours, from white and pink to red and blue (the blue ones will only keep their colours on acid soils, reverting to pink in other conditions). And now the breeders have come up with a new Magical Series with flowers that changes colour as the season progress, creating a spectrum of shades on one plant.

 2)Clematis Montana

deal for weaving through trees or training along wires fixed to a wall. This climber comes in different forms, and all have long twining stems covered with scented pink or white flowers. This hard clematis needs little or no pruning : just cut back old stems lightly to keep it tidy.

 3)Alchemilla mollis

Loved by designers for its scallop-edged leaves and sprays of tiny yellow-green flowers, Lady's mantle is one of the easiest plants to grow.It will thrive in sun or shade, and can be used to edge a border or decorate a gravel or rockery garden.

 4)Choisa 'AZtec Gold'

This stunning evergreen shrub is guaranteed to make your garden shine. The leaves are green with gold tips, and from late spring to early summer its covered with almond-scented white flowers. Another flush of blooms often appears in autumn. Plant it in a sunny spot for the brightest foliage, and use it at the back of a border or as a specimen.

5)Philadelphus 'Snowbell'

Sweetly scented white flowers make this elegant mock orange hard to ignore, yet despite its celebrity status in the garden, it's surprisingly undemanding. You can plant it almost anywhere, except in deep shade, but to enjoy the fragrance to the full, try to find a sheltered spot close to a seating area or walkway.

 6)Leucantheum 'BroadwayLight'

This Shasta daisy may not look like much when you buy it in spring, but once planted it soon produces a tight mound of upright stems, followed by daisy-like blooms with butter-yellow petals that gradually fade to white, producing an intriguing two-tone effect. Plant it at the front of a sunny or partially shaded border or in a large pot on a patio.

 7)Festuca glauca 'intense blue'

If you are looking for year-round colour, this clump-forming grass is a fantastic choice. Its vivid blue leaves make a superb edging for a sunny border or plant in a pot. This tough plant is very drought-resistant, but will suffer in waterlogged soils.

8)Geranium Rozzanne

One of the best hardy genariums, rozanne sports masses of mauve flowers with pale mauve centres from May to October. Grow it in a mixed border in sun or partial shade, and cut back old flowers and foliage in summer to promote a new flush later in the season.

 9)Buddleja Chip Collection

All buddlejas tolerate a wide range of sites and soils, but unlike the tall, gangly plants you may be familiar with, these recently introduced dwarf forms have a bushy habit and are ideal for pots, as well as borders. In summer, they are covered with blue, deep red, or lilac flowers, which also attract butterflies and bees. Plants are happy in partial shade, and most soils.

10)Canadian Lilacs

In late spring, filling the garden with their heady scent, and these gorgeous forms come in delicate pastel shades of white, pink and purple. They are also perfect for small gardens and will grow well in full sun or part shade, and any soil, except acidic.
